Maritza Torres: Rediscovering Her Roots

Maritza Torres grew up in Murray, a suburb on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah; there weren’t many people there who looked like her—no people of color, nor a very large Latino community. Her school was 80 percent “white.” She also grew up in a Mormon family; her father is from California, her mother was born in El Paso, and her grandparents are Mexican, from Pachuca, Mexico.
