Introducing “The Angelinos”

By João Vieira

The anguish of living between two worlds is seeing life through comparisons. When I’m here, I think of the people and memories I left behind there. When I’m there, I think of the life I’ve built here on my own.

The anguish of living between two worlds is seeing life through comparisons. When I’m here, I think of the people and memories I left behind there. When I’m there, I think of the life I built here with my own two hands.

Here and there. There and here.

Here and there. There and here.

I live between two distinct realities, because I am an immigrant. I recognize the stranger who lives within me. I accept the contradictions and the confusion, and I embrace my language. For now, that is enough for me.

“Os Angelinos” by Fronteiras Film Collective

The short film above is the proof of concept for “Os Angelinos,” the first feature film in the “Fronteiras” anthology. It is a city-symphony developed from a multilingual open letter to Los Angeles, the American metropolis built and rebuilt through various waves of migration. We present the introduction to three of the ten stories narrated by immigrant Angelenos. They, in turn, construct poetic narratives based on the concept of “here” and “there.”
